Hi fellow beat enthusiasts.

I've recently acquired a 1992 beat and am more than pleased. I had forgotten how much fun driving could be. I run a Nissan EXA on a daily basis and before that I had a Nissan NX and a Mitsu Starion before that - none were as much fun as the beat. It's a feeling I haven't had since I had my first sports car - an old TVR with an MGA engine.

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the turbo kit advertised on the halfway site (http://www.halfway.co.jp/)? Lots of bucks but looks interesting.

Hi John, lots of money indeed. I think Iv'e found the makings of an electric supercharger for less than $100. I'm just trying to arrange to get it shipped cos the company refuse to ship outside the US.
Should give 3-5psi boost

Thanks for your comments TinyTim. I've been following the thr ead with great interest. I have looked at the US sites but didn't think to source from hobbyists. Good thinking. I've ruled out the turbo for the moment because of the cost, so v. interested to see how your project works out. It certainly seems feasible and affordable. I take the point that an electric motor might have a short life but I share your view that switched in for short bursts and for critical moments only 15 - 20 mins would be an acceptable life-span.

I recall Steve M's comments a while back about overtaxing the beat engine and I tend to agree. On the other hand, most standard engines are set up to achieve a compromise between performance and economy and to satisfy a broad range of everyday 'normal' driving requirements. I think a turbo might have to be backed up with stronger pistons, rods and bearings etc. but from what I have read and experienced most engines can take a bit of mild tweaking without too much damage - especially in the aspiration department. I understand superchargers do have an advantage over turbos in that less stress and strain is imposed on the bottom end of the engine and for sure 2 or 3lbs extra intake pressure will make the beat motor run more efficiently without causing major damage. Does Oz know of any supercharged (or turbo) beats in Japan, I wonder. How they perform, problems etc.

Keep up the postings and let us all know how you go.

I don't think it would be possible to get the volume of air required to feed the engine out of a compressed air cylinder quickly enough. I'm guessing at an additional 500-700 liters of air per minute.
