So Jurek and I were talking and got discussing boot pops for beats...

And we both aggreed it would be really easy to do....

Well Step number 1 is plan 3 days to do it as it's needlessly hard  hee hee

Step2

I recommend removing the boot lid, allowing you to work on the lock without your arms going dead

This is done by removing the 4 bolts on the hinges. If you have a brake light it may be necessary to cut the wires in a suitable manner so you can reconnect them later.

Step 3

Find somewhere suitable to work on the lid, as mine has a spoiler it was ok to free stand. Just be careful not to break it as they are only plastic afterall!

Step 4

Remove the lock by unscrewing the 3 bolts holding it on. Then release the mechnism behind the key hole.

BE SURE NOT TO LOOSE THE SPRING OR CLIP

Step 5

Spend the rest of the day trying to connect the rod from the new boot pop kit (purchased from Ebay) to the exsisting rod and making it work!

Remember the rod needs to move freely and easily without rubbing or catching on anything.

The kit from ebay is basically a solanoid which when a charge is put through it it pushes/pulls the rod just turning the key does!

When you've finally got it all working in harmony, make sure that you can still use the key because if the solanoid failed you'd be locked out of the boot for good!!!!

Then reassemble

Step 6

We added a spring to the return mechanism (the thing that pulls the lock back to lock it, and then releases it pushing the lock open again) as we weren't confident of the strength of the standard one.

Step 7

When you are happy that it's all working ok, doesn't catch, and works perfectly EVERYTIME. Then you can run the power supply for the solanoid through the boot internals.

I chose the route that followed the drilled holes already in the boot.

Then put the lid back on, and reconnect the brake light (if you have one)

Step 8

Find a suitable place to mount a switch!

baring in mind that unless you install a spring or gas spring (which we are doing at a later date) you need to be able to pull the boot open as you press the button.

That's why we chose next to the fuel pull, as I can reach the spoiler from there.

When choosing a mount make sure it won't get pressed whilst you are driving!

Step 9

Run the live from the solanoid to the switch, then to a 12v feed.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO FUSE IT JUST IN CASE!

The kit I purchased from ebay included a fuse holder, they don't cost much from places like Halfrauds and I strongly recommend them. ESPICALLY if you're connecting it straight to the battery.

We earted the solanoid off the boot lid, and then earted the boot lid to the car just to make sure.

And finally

Step 10

Test it, test it and test it again!

As mentioned previously we are adding a gas spring to the system soon so that it will lift the boot when the button is pressed, eliminating the need to lift and push at the same time!

Hope this is helpful to people, the worse bit is making the new rod connect to the old one without it getting stuck or stopping the key from working properly.

I strongly recommend patience with it, and constantly reminding yourself that if the key fails as a result, and the solanoid slips chances are you'd be locked out for good!!!
