I did my timing belt the other week and the spring that came out of the car was different length to the one in the kit. Why are they different or is it just new and improved. My car is fine at the moment but should I be concerned

Hi Adam,

Hopefully the one that came off was longer than the new one.... Normally they do tend to stretch a bit over time so being different lengths shouldn't be a problem...

If I'm wrong then I'm sure Steve will correct me....:o

Hi Adam

It would appear from the parts manual that there are two different springs, one spring suits engines with a number up to 6100491 and a different spring for engines with a number greater than 6100492 .

The part numbers are as follows:
Engines up to 6100491 14516-PZ1-000
Engines after 6100492 14516-P1A-000

As you know Im rebuilding two beat engines at the moment and have one of each type of spring on order. so you are welcome to look at them when they come in.

The question is how safe would it be if the wrong spring was used. And what was the part number of the kit you got? Also whats your engine number?

Kit number 06141-P36-306 is for engines after 6100492
Kit number 06142-p36-305 is for engines before 6100491

The one thats in my car now is the shorter one. I was under the impression that there was only one type since I only given one part number. It looks like its the wrong one. So what should I do now?

a) Change the spring!
b) Keep driving and see what happens!
c) Beat someone!

Well Adam I would do Option A..
I would change the spring to the correct type (I know it takes time to change it to the right one but Honda obviously changed them for a reason)

And as for beating someone or something make sure it`s not the beat.. get yourself one of them stress balls : D

Maybe someone would be able to say for definite weather or not it is safe to use the wrong spring

You will find that where there is a differant engine range etc. that nearly all the part numbers superseed to the later number any way.

The only timing belt kit you can get from Honda UK is 06141-P36-306.

This it the belt kit i have fitted to my Beat, Adrians Beat, Roz's Beat and have supplied to several other people.

Now whether there is any differance in the spring i had not really noticed, You will know if your belt is too tight as it will make a humming/whining noise when the engine is warm.

I saw the two number kits in the parts manual after JohnD mentioned it. But I guess that you would know by now if something went wrong. The spring that came out of my car is original honda so they had to sell it at some stage. Have a look at it:

It must be ok to use either spring then. I just thought id mention it because when i asked my honda dealer for two spring he rang me back up asking for engine numbers as there are two listed in the parts manual (P37 Number 20) my engine is pre 6100491. and my friend who is also rebuild his beat has a post 6100492. and we have different springs on order

So it looks Like its ok then adam, thats good news :)

I just spoke to my brother who was in charge of this and he said that he tightened the belt with his hand. So I am not really worried any more:D

Well the spring has only one job and once its done that’s it. It is just to get the right tension and then you could take it out if you like. My brother obviously doesn't believe in it. I was on the phone while he was doing the tension. He has never let me down so I have no reason not to belie him.
