I bought new caps from an electronics shop at about 20p each and took it to the computer repairs place next door who cleaned and soldered the board. All in cost me about £40 and repaired the ecu.

Did you manage to clean the pcb successfully? Just noticed mine has stopped working (plus the fuel and temp gauge) and was wondering what the best way to clean the board would be.

Thats good news Twcwt! Forgot to mention that I also blasted the AIC valve with brake cleaner. Glad you got it sorted, that's one more back on the road. As far as I remember the ECU needs about 200km...
I don't know if this is adding anything to Steve's answer, but my Beat was suffering the same issue and I assumed the worst and thought it may be a valve issue. The misfire (and CEL) was solved by

Update... After setting the timing correctly I took the dizzy cap off and marked the position of the rotor. I lifted the dizzy out and rotated the whole thing anti clockwise and reinserted, then...
So do I need to remove and rotate the whole dizzy (tried several times unsuccessfully) or move the gear on the bottom of the dizzy one notch?
I did initially, yes. Now that i have tweaked the timing much closer to where it should be, it's less noticeable.
I didn't do the soldering myself as it looked a bit precise for my unskilled hand. I took it to a local computer repair shop, in fact the bloke in the shop told me it what a pain double sided...
