    Battery

Does anyone have the definitive answer on batteries? Someone has posted about a Nissan van being matched by their local KwitFit but my local Kwikfit obviously only employ people with no imagination, humour, or apparent intelligence who just looked in one book and said 'You'll have to go to a Honda dealer'.

They didn't even breathe in through their teeth before saying it.

I'd be very grateful for the answer.

I fitted a DETA 53520 and its a perfect match for the one that was in, apart from there was no where to fit the vent. However, there is a big gap for any gas to escape between the boot and the engine!

If your not pushed about the vent fitting, there should be no bother getting a battery to fit, its the same size as most smaller import cars..e.g. the Micra, Civic etc etc.

So if you want to avoid the hassle, just ask for a battery to fit an import Civic (the one with the small terminals).

Halfords recently opened in Dublin, but as far as I can see, they do the correct size battery but with European terminals which are too big.

So your first port of call should be some independent motor factor, I find that they seem to have a little more time for customers as oppose to larger chains.

Thank you all for your responses. I couldn't find that battery anywhere on the web Paul and knowing it didn't have the place for the vent I wasn't minded to just order one without looking elsewhere first.

I thought that might be the answer Steve. It is a lot of money for a battery if there is an exact duplicate with a different label on available for a hundred pounds less elsewhere.

    I shall keep looking.

Thanks for the offer Barkley but the carriage is why it's always better buying locally.

It looks like the closest in size is an 028 (which is available in both terminal types); it just isn't exactly the same is all!

    Thanks again for your offer.

Well I finally got the answer, which is (tada) 055

    (big deal eh?)

But you see if I'd had that magic number when that oik said "You'll have to go to a main dealer", I could've given him a withering look and said "I think it's just an 055 with small terminals actually, but with an attitude like yours I'd rather eat broken glass than buy one from you, bub." (not that I ever would, you understand, I just wanted the option)

AND, the actual battery I bought (a Varta A15 (540 127 033)) NOT ONLY has a handle (amazing how much 5p of plastic can colour your judgement), AND has a testing facility (so when you've left your lights on overnight and the car won't start you can think "hmm, better test that battery"), BUT, is not only sealed but has a little hole in the side, with which and a pipe that my battery specialist had, connects perfectly to the gas tube which you just detach from the plastic lump that fits on top of the original battery.

I hope you agree it's all been worth the wait to find that lot out.
